Behavioral Activation: Moving Through Inertia

How to take small, gentle physical actions when depression or burnout makes getting out of bed feel impossible.

Why Waiting for Motivation Doesn't Work

When you are feeling down or burnt out, your brain says: "I will do the dishes / take a shower / start that email once I feel motivated." But depression and burnout actively suppress dopamine, meaning motivation will almost never arrive first.

In Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, **Behavioral Activation** proves that action creates motivation, not the other way around.

The 5-Minute Micro-Action Rule

Instead of trying to tackle a giant, intimidating project, pick an action so ridiculously small that your brain has no reason to resist:

  1. Pick ONE micro-task: Drinking one glass of water, opening the window blinds, or putting on clean socks.
  2. Commit to doing it for just 2 minutes without expecting yourself to finish everything.
  3. Log the completed micro-action in ReAlign. Notice the tiny sense of momentum it creates.
